Yes, I Am a Child of the ’80s

Well, I was born in the ’70s, but my ‘formitive’ years were the ’80s.  I loved little critters…I had squirrels, hamsters, gerbils…weird looking back, but I had quite an array of them.  My kids have been BEGGING for a pet for a really, really long time.  They would have been happy with a goldfish, they were becoming desperate.  Every time they were asked to draw a family picture…it included a dog…that we don’t have.  Owen brought home a little project “If I had $100 I would buy_______” he filled in the blank with “a dog”.  They had even resorted to taking turns pretending to be the puppy dog.  I was starting to feel really guilty.  I had even had fleeting thoughts of getting a dog…those thoughts faded quickly when I came back to reality and remembered that I have 4 kids…well, 5 if you include Darling Husband (and though he is handy with the power tools…still as much ‘maintenance’ as the kids…possibly more), I certainly did not need a 6th!  Plus, E & DH are allergic to dogs…case closed.

Wednesday morning, I was getting my daily dose of Facebook…and a friend was giving away 3 baby guinea pigs…one look at that picture and it was all over…I wanted not one, but two…they are social critters, so having each other would make them happier.  We are no longer a pet-less family!

Meet Gizmo and Spike :).  Can you guess who is who?  They are such cute little boogers!  They are gonna have to get used to the chaotic nature of our home, but I think they are a wonderful addition to our family.  They even talk to each other…I would love to know what they are saying…probably “I hope they know not to feed us after midnight”.

Today’s secret revealed…I usually try to do at least one post about food per week, but the only thing worth blogging about that I made was a Reese’s Cup Cake that I made for a special birthday celebration at my weekly girls’ group…it is the only recipe that my Mom has forbidden me to share.  Needless to say, the W.A.C. girls are planning a revolt…

Confidence…Where Art Thou?

I promised myself that when I reached 100,000 visits that I would take the ‘next step’ with this blog.  A small step towards making this more than just a place I can exercise my creative side.  I would like it to be a financially self-sustaining entity.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t spend much keeping these ‘doors’ open…but I do spend a little.  I would like to break even (baby-steps).

My biggest problem is fear…I need to step outside of my comfort zone and do what I need to do.  BUT I’M SCARED!  This really is not a plea for money…I am sharing how I feel…I’m sure I’m not alone.  Your fear may not be blog related…but what are you not doing because you are scared???

The shy little girl inside me is in charge, she needs to be sent to time-out by the confident big girl that I know is in here somewhere.

Today’s secret revealed…I think all of the above is a big enough reveal, I am going to muster up the courage I need…I hope that by putting this ‘out there’ that it makes me stay accountable to myself.

My Handy Man

He wields his power tools with skill and precision.  He is a master of improvisation (both with tools and with comedy…makes a project much more entertaining).  He is a crazy perfectionist.  He has vision…his vision matches what I see in my head.  Does that make him a mind-reader?  I kinda hope so…and kinda hope not ;).

So my mind-reading handy man rockstar took on a project that I have wanted done pretty much since we moved in…our ‘bar closet’.  This closet is where we store our bar supplies (wine, liquor, mixers, mixing supplies) and my less frequently used small appliances and bakeware.  This is what it looked like before the redux (shamefully).

I did not capture the sagginess of the shelves where the bottles were stored in this picture…but, I was very concerned about them collapsing, making a mess, hurting someone and costing tons of money to replace our supplies.  I had to limit the number of bottles per shelf.  The appliances did much better as far a shelf sag went, but it is still an eye sore (not to mention a disorganized mess).

So, my handy man and his little helper removed all of the wire shelving…

I really hate this stuff…I want to yank it out of every closet in my house…but the budget only allowed this project for now.

Buh-bye wire shelves!  The over abundance of holes had to be filled…

Messy, messy…I got R2-D2 (aka our shop vac) out and cleaned this up, then did a quickie repaint of the walls.  We debated on staining vs. painting these shelves…we went with staining.  We found a stain/polyurethane combo that made it a no-brainer decision…1 coat of stain vs. primer & 2 coats of paint…stain, definitely.  The stain grade boards were more expensive, but I believe it was a wash given the amount of primer and paint we would have needed (we stained the entire project with a quart of stain…plenty left over).

My super detail oriented darling husband made lots of measurements, having some issues with odd stud placement, but got it all mapped out & ready for the test run (pre-stain).

You should have seen (I should have snapped a pic) of the detailed labeling that went on the backside of the pieces of wood…crazy detailed…anyone could have figured out exactly where each piece was to go.  Once all of this was laid out, he needed my help deciding on the wine storage…he called me out to the garage…

How is that for detailed?  He even had bottles for me to put in the diagrams so I could decide…I went with the larger, of course ;).  This part of the project is where his improv skills really had a chance to shine…he doesn’t have any specialized woodworking saws or routers…he did this with a mitre saw, circular hand saw, a belt sander and a chisel bit.

He made the X pieces fit perfectly together…I can’t imagine what he might be capbable of if properly equipped…oh the endless project list I have in my brain!  We spent Saturday night staining shelves together in the garage after the kids were tucked in…romantic, huh?  Here’s a great tip for when you have to give stain (or paint) drying time before flipping over or adding another coat…Glad Press & Seal…this stuff has soooooo many uses!  It will keep the brush (works with rollers, too) from drying out.

Here are the finished shelves going in…I love the dark contrast.

See the little corner pieces? (this pic is kinda blurry, but this isn’t the most brightly lit spot in our house)  They added that finishing touch the joints needed.  Now here is my favorite part…the stunner of the project…the wine storage.

I opted for the less deep shelves that had the wrap arounds…I feel it gives this space a more custom look and allows me to get my new wine glasses that I keep stored in their original boxes room to go above.  I am still in the process of ‘moving back in’, but here is all of our bar supplies happily in their new home.

I am amazed by how much these shelves actually hold!  I’m gonna need to stock up on wine (bummer!) to get the X filled up.

Today’s secret revealed…my darling husband is never 100% satisfied with his awesome work…he wants it to look like an artisan built the shelves…tongue & groove joints, etc…like furniture.  I think this is fabulous & that he is a total rockstar handy man!

Infinite Wisdom

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!  I love, love, love his books…who doesn’t?  I just wanted to share some of my favorite quotes as a tribute to the amazing wisdom my children ingest without even realizing it…because it is FUN!  I hope these quotes stay firmly planted in their growing brains.  I’m starting with my favorite…definitely words to live by!

Love this one…individuality matters.

…reading takes you places…

 Whatever direction you choose…

This one holds a special place for the NICU Nurse in me…

His thoughts on love…I heart this!

More on love…

He even knew of our Wednesdays ;)…

If you want to celebrate with some yummies for you little ‘Things’…

And maybe…just maybe…the ‘try it you might like it’ will work on my little Sam I Am…

Now this post has come to an end…

Today’s secret revealed…I came up with the idea for those green egg cupcakes in a pinch last year…I may have to make them as a Friday after school surprise :).

The Princess Has a New Pillow

A couple of weeks ago I worked through what kind of bolster I wanted to make for Em’s room.  I have had fabric for longer than I care to admit for this project.  Over the weekend, I finally decided get it done.  I want to be the first to admit…this is far from perfect…but I am happy with the way it turned out.

I started with a remnant of fabulous fabric…I believe it was $3.50 for the whole piece.  I was going to make a “tube”, so I estimated how big around the tube needed to be and folded the uneven edges and pressed it.  I got out my roll of upholstery zipper, this stuff is awesome, but be careful not to unzip it…or zip the pull all the way off…trust me).  I chose my zipper length & cut it and pinned the zipper to one of the folded edges.

I loved this fabric for having built-in guides! It was really helpful with folding and pinning.

Hi VooDoo!  He’s my pincushion :).   I am no seamstress, this did not end pretty…had to improvise.

I ran back and forth over either end of the zipper to make ‘stops’, then I did it again over the fininshed area, as you see above.  On to the cording.  Making custom cording is super easy…all you really need is a strip of fabric and the cotton cording, fold the fabric & using your zipper foot (so you can get super close to the cording) sew as close as you can to the now hidden cording.

I always try to over estimate, but of course I was just a bit under the amount I needed by like an inch :(…I improvised & left a small area on the finished end without cording…not very noticable.  I looked around the house for a template for my round ends…

Perfect!  The trickiest and most tedious part of this project was finishing the ends.  I turned the cover wrong side out, and folded the end over the amount I needed…then I started by pinning the cording…all raw edges should point the same direction.

Also, you don’t want to pin through (or sew through) both layers of the main cover…just the layer that is folded over.  Once the cording was pinned, I went back and added the round end piece…wrong side out.  Sewing this was tricky, after I was done, I trimmed the excess fabric off.

Here is a finished end…again, not perfect…

To get the ends of the cording to overlap, you have to pin them with the ends pointing down toward the raw edges.

I stuffed a body pillow in and zipped her up!

See how the ends aren’t perfectly stuffed?  Well, I over estimated the amount I needed when I finished the second end…rather than redoing that, I chose to improvise (kinda my M.O.)…I found some foam pieces cluttering up in my soon-to-be-craft area (fingers crossed) and cut them to the size I needed (see my template?) and stuffed the ends.

So there you have it folks…a super inexpensive bolster that is the width of Princess Pete’s bed…just what I envisioned :).

Today’s secret revealed…using the body pillow ($9) saved big bucks compared to an actual bolster insert ($30-40 for this size).  I’m sure eventually I will shorten up one of those ends…probably the one that was short the cording…two birds with one stone ;).

My Version of Fusion

Maybe this will sound dated, but Asian Fusion cuisine is spectacular.  After a weekend family trip to Costco, we splurged for an adults-only dinner…the kids (3 of them anyway) like seafood so-so…I found it unnecessary to include them in our treat…they got Costco pizza (which, if you haven’t tried it…probably my top 3 pizzas, so good…and cheap!).  We purchased langostinos (so RedLobster a la 1978) and large diver scallops.  Darling Husband wanted me to do them all in this cajun-y cream sauce that I sorta made up…but I wanted to try something a little different with a few of the scallops.  I chose 6 big ones for my appetizer course.  I don’t have step-by-step pics for you today, but for this little method I really don’t think they are necessary.

I poured some ginger soy dressing in a shallow dish, and rolled the scallops in the dressing.  I heated a stainless skillet over medium high heat…I wanted it smoking hot!  I drizzled in a bit of olive oil and a smidge of sesame oil (so fragrant).  When it was screaming hot, I carefully placed each scallop in…it made a HUGE mess…oil popping everywhere…so worth the mess.  I let them cook 2ish minutes on each side (I didn’t force them, let them cook until they ‘release’).  While they finished up, I tossed a bag of shelled edammame into the microwave to steam.  I dressed the edammame with chili garlic sauce (you can find it in a little jar with the asian foods, that is what it is called…chili garlic sauce) and a teensy bit of sesame oil, tossing them around.  I laid the finished scallops on top.  It is visually stunning, I think…and as delicious as it looks!

I hope you will try this!

Today’s secret revealed…I try really hard to avoid Costco on the weekend…but DH wanted to go, so we went.  It was crazy crowded!  We shut it down lol.

La Vida Low Carb

So, it is ‘that’ time of year…Super Bowl is over, Mardi Gras is over…no more good excuses not to watch what I’m eating.  Time to try to get rid of the holiday damage.  I don’t mind calorie counting…if I want a small indulgence, I can do extra exercise to compensate, BUT darling husband prefers the low carb route (he lost over 100 lbs doing it, so we know it works for him).  These two methods don’t really work together.  To avoid temptation and cooking 2-3 different meals (I still have to cook for the kids, ya know)…I am going to play along with the low carb thing.  Problem:  I (heart) carbs!  So I have to practice my will power, especially when I’m mixing up the mac & cheese for the kiddos.

I know I’m not alone in my endeavor, so here a few ideas for y’all…

Roasted Chickpeas

I made a double batch of these (in the regular oven), when I make another batch…I will do 1 can in the toaster oven.  I cooked mine for 55 minutes & lots didn’t get crisp…the ones that were crispy were fabulous!  I tried just olive oil & kosher salt.

cauliflower pizza

I haven’t tried this one yet, but our usual Friday night fare is pizza…maybe tonight!  I hope it is good, because we love our pizza.

roasted cauliflower

This is my favorite way to fix cauliflower!  It is also a great method for broccoli, asparagus, and green beans!  YUM!  Even great when I’m not avoiding carbs like the plague.

seared tuna

As soon as my favorite place to get ahi tuna has it…we will be having this.  It is easy, but you really need sushi grade tuna to do it.  I think I am going to follow Chef Anne Burrell’s method.  I saw her prepare it on Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, and both DH & I were salivating!  Don’t be afraid of the rareness!  It is DELICIOUS!

Today’s secret revealed…when I met DH he pretty much ate ‘normal’…not at all adventurous…amazing what 13+ years with me has done to him…he tries things now just for the sake of trying something new!  Yes, I’m mentally patting myself on the back, but he would totally admit that I did that for him.

Personalizing Shared Space

Not long ago, I did a tutorial about the “E” canvas I had made…I knew I wouldn’t be able to wait very long to use my new-to-me Silhouette cutter to make an “L” & an “O”.  I got some of the self-adhesive vinyl, so I couldn’t stand it any longer.  I am no where near proficient with the Silhouette YET, but I am figuring it out.  I made the letters in the same font I had used for E’s.

I prepped my canvases with the Mod Podge and scrapbook paper.  I wanted to use the same paper for all three of them, letting the paint be the difference.

Here’s Lukes…

and Owen’s…

As I suspected, these came out so much cleaner than Ethan’s…they aren’t perfect, but I’m not sure I really want them to be ;).

Close-up of the L…

I probably could have cleaned up the bleeding, but I wasn’t that concerned.  To show you the difference, here is a close-up of the E…

I love all three of them!

Today’s secret revealed…wanna know how O&L got assigned orange & green as ‘their’ colors?  My mom bought 2 pairs of crocs when they were just starting to walk…1 green pair & 1 orange pair.  I had to decide who would get which color…I decided that because Luke was named after my Mom’s family…the Clemson Fans…that he would get orange ;).  Amazing what a role college football plays in my everyday life LOL.

A Kind Heart…

Here is something to ponder…

Being kind is so much healthier…malice makes you feel bad…so why bother.  You can always choose to be kind…so do.

Today’s secret revealed…”kill ’em with kindness” is a very Southern way of going about your business, I don’t love the delivery of this method…but I do love the point.

Princess Pete Needs a Pillow

One of Em’s many nicknames.  I am ready to tackle another project in her room, but need your help (yes, you).  I am going to make a bolster pillow, it will be nearly as wide as her full size bed, and I can’t decide on the shape…round or rectangle.

Here are a few samples for you to help me decide…

via Southern Living (I heart that sofa…trying to focus on pillows)

Both shapes have their pros & cons…HELP!

Today’s secret revealed…I am dying to repaint her room pink (very light, not pepto bismal-y at all), but when DH asks “why?”, my only answer is “because I want to”…not really a convincing argument.
