BELIEVE…

I have come to that dreaded cross-road where my eldest child is questioning his belief in Santa…I didn’t know how I wanted to handle this.  I knew I didn’t want to tell a bold faced lie to him…but I didn’t want to watch the magic disappear, either.

I want my children to look back on our Christmases fondly, remembering the magic and appreciate the love that made that magic.  We have our Shelf Elf, Belfie, it is so fun to watch all of them search for him each morning…E is usually the first to find him.  See, he wants to believe, but is getting old enough to want the whole story.  We have our annual call from Santa…I have to do some manipulating of my contacts and facebook so that when the Big Guy calls, his name, location, and picture all reflect that it is Santa calling.  They love writing out their lists, so they remember what to ask for when the time comes…I love trying to decipher the lists, especially O & L’s…they are in Kindegarten :).

I was a bit shocked to learn that E had told a younger friend that he did not believe in Santa.  I took him aside, and asked him…his eyes got big and glassy…he did not want to admit he was questioning Santa’s existence.  I assured him that it is okay to question everything…but realize there are somethings you have to have faith in.  I told him that Santa is magical…that as long as he believes in the magic of Santa, that Santa will come to see him…that if he stops believing, the only gifts Santa brings is underwear (thanks Kim 😉 )…the rest will just be from Mom & Dad.  That just doesn’t sound fun…so I think for now he still believes in the magic of Santa.  I hope he always does…it is the spirit of happiness that comes with all of the fun of Christmas…the anticipation of sitting in his lap…of will I still get that most wanted item…did I make the ‘Nice List’?

Today’s Secret revealed…we, of course, honor the Reason for this Season…the Gift from God…sending his Son down to lead us to our salvation…I don’t struggle with explaining our faith to the children…though as we waited to see Santa, O & L started asking about Jesus on the cross above the altar…I kept it brief for now, but told him that he died to save us.  I wanted them to focus on the Miracle of his birth.

Christmas Home Tour 2011

WELCOME!  I feel like this year has flown by…only 10 more days until Christmas!  Let’s take a little tour of my home all dressed up…well the ‘clean parts’ anyway.

The crown jewel of most Christmas decor…the tree.  I love this tree!  It is artificial, prelit, and covered in very special ornaments.  I don’t get that fresh-cut fragrance, but between my Mrs. Meyers Iowa Pine diffuser, the real wreath and miscellaneous tree trimmings…well, my house smells like a frazier fir forest!

I love decorating the tree with the kids…I have to practice some self control when it comes to their placement of ornaments…just let it go & make memories with them.  It really makes me emotional.  They are such sweet children (usually) and I know that in the blink of an eye they will be grown and I will be begging them to hang their special ornament that they made back in 2009!

***

Look at those little hand prints…I’m sure one day I will be sobbing as I very carefully unwrap these…kinda making me misty just thinking about it.  They really love to look at all of the ornaments.  I love telling them how old the ornaments are…like the one from 1979…so old!

***

The view of the family room…the moment I walked into this room for the first time I knew that archway above the fireplace would be the perfect place to put a tree at Christmastime, it was a long six months to wait last year.  We do not have a power outlet up there, so hiding the cord is tricky…it runs between the two pieces of ribbon that hold the wreath (well, a piece of heavy twine holds the wreath…it is hidden in there, too).   This is the best angle I could get with my available lenses…I could really use a wide-angle, but not really in the budget right now.

Santa is enjoying his morning coffee with his feet propped up on the ottoman…fuzzy crocs instead of his black boots ;).

***

A full view of the mantle… I love the sun flare, God’s light shining down on us.  It helps me remember to be grateful for all of the blessings in my life.  Though we have difficult times, there is always so much to be grateful for!  I am most grateful for my family’s health.

***

A close-up of the center piece of my mantle.  I left two small nativities up all year…as I was packing up all of my decorations in January, I couldn’t bring myself to pack all of them away.  I thought ‘Why do these only come out at Christmas?  Why wouldn’t I want to be reminded of this miracle all year?’.

***

Doesn’t my turquoise duck look cute all dressed up for Christmas???  I just love him!  That Santa is holding a baby in a Christening gown.  During Emma’s first Christmas holiday she was baptized…in the same little stone chapel I was baptized in…wearing my Christening gown.  It was a special day.  My Mom found that Santa, I do believe he is my favorite.  The angel on the cloud belonged to my husband’s Gram, she is with the angels now.  I know that people say you shouldn’t attach sentimental value to ‘things’, but with things like this…how do you not???  I think I will keep my sentimental attachment.  I find it comforting.

See, there’s more of the fresh greenery…smell it?  I love it…but not enough to give up my pre-lit tree!

***

I couldn’t resist incorporating my color obsession of the year…turquoise!  I LOVE it with red!!!  I really wanted to have a white tree to put in the archway…so I could decorate it with turquoise and red ornaments…just dreamy.  Maybe I will be able to grab a smoking deal after Christmas…or maybe I will happen upon one at Goodwill.

That is just boxwood…no smell there.  I had some leftover from the door spray and mantle wreath.  It is scattered about, usually mingled with the frazier fir cuttings.  Don’t forget to check out the door spray I made…and how I dressed up my wreath.

***

My silvery twig tree…this is in the dining room (aka my craft room…gotta get that cleared out STAT!).  The kids collected the twigs for me…I wanted to do the Thankful Tree over Thanksgiving, but never got around to it 🙁  I had a paper punch malfunction & never got back to it.  I do love the way the twigs look in the crystal with the sparkly balls.  I added the other two bowls of ornaments to complete the space.

When the morning light hits it, it is really beautiful…couldn’t quite capture it with my camera, but I hope you can picture it in your mind…or stop by early one day & we can sip coffee while we take it in LOL.

***

Certainly you didn’t think I forgot my fur wreath???  I gave her a new ‘do with the silver bow this year.  Of course, Belfie still loves to land here…wouldn’t this be your choice of spots?  It certainly would be mine!  I wish I had a pillow (non-shedding, of course) made of soft fur like this!

Well, that about does it, folks!  I hope you have enjoyed my little tour…and please come back to visit in the new year!  I can’t believe that 2012 is just around the corner!  2012!

Wishing everyone peace, love, happiness and health at Christmastime…and throughout the new year!

Today’s secret revealed…I took the pictures, edited them, designed the card, ordered them, addressed them…but can’t seem to remember to get the stamps to mail them…so don’t worry!  They are coming…hopefully before Christmas :)!

Dressing Up My Door

My usual schedule of decorating our home for Christmas over the long Thanksgiving weekend was pushed back a week after spending it with my husband’s family.  I realized as we prepared to head South, that this was the first year in nearly a decade that I wasn’t cooking a large portion of the food (my Mom & I usually divide it up…you may remember my Thanksgiving posts from last year?).  I had a very relaxed, non-stressful Thanksgiving meal (unfortunately I can’t say the same for my Mother-in-law, but we all helped ease the stress as much as possible).

On to the topic at hand…Christmas decorating is in full swing, I started pulling out the boxes on Thursday…just a couple of hours before my darling husband called to ask if I could handle him inviting his boss (from Washington state) over for dinner…he called around 4:30…I was a physical mess, the house was a mess, dinner was not even in my brain yet (I was planning on leftover spaghetti).  I had just about 2 hours to get everything pulled together…this is not the sort of dinner you want to be anything short of spectacular.  It was a success, and only slightly stressful LOL.  Another day that the decorating didn’t get underway.

So, Friday before the Stinky Boys arrived on the school bus, I got to work on the idea I had in my head for our front door.  I usually have a wreath, with lights & a big sparkly red bow…I wanted something different this year.  I went by Lowe’s and asked for some Christmas tree scraps…those are free, if you didn’t know.  I got plenty to choose from…I looked for plump sprigs of Frazier fir.  My idea was for a pretty, natural door spray.  I also trimmed some long pieces from our 2 big boxwood bushes (they needed some trimming anyway).  My ‘secret’ ingredient was going to be some fresh rosemary from my garden.

Aren’t they fresh and beautiful?  I considered a few options for bundling all of these together…wire, twine…then I decided on the easiest:  zip ties!  Darling husband has a ginormous cannister…even has green ones!

So I started grouping them together, starting with the Frazier fir.  I took the bunch over to my door, trimmed a few pieces back and this is what I ended up with…

You can barely see the zip tie!  Be sure that you have a couple of branches above the zip tie, to keep it from sliding down.  Next, I grouped the boxwood and rosemary together.  I wanted to have a few sprigs of boxwood at the top of the spray to cover the raw ends of the rest (my pic is upside down).

Then I zip tied the two bunches together…and added in some faux red berries.  Once the two sets of greens were zipped together, I slid the berry sprigs in and folded the wire ends down in the back to keep them in place.  I wanted to hang it by my red velvet ribbon, so I made a collar that I stapled in the back to cover up where all of them are tied together.  I had darling husband staple gun the long pieces I hung it from into the top of our door.  Voila!  What do you think???

It smells heavenly!  Traditionally I hang a live wreath over our fireplace (we have an artificial tree, so I do this for the smell…I can’t give up the convenience of the pre-lit tree!).  I bought the most basic, but largest wreath at Lowe’s…it was $15.  I had some leftover boxwood and berries, so I decided to dress it up, too (you could also say I went boxwood crazy).  I love the layers of texture!  Here is the before of the wreath…

…and the after…

I just shoved the boxwood & berries between the layers of Frazier fir…it was way too easy & cheaper than buying the fancier wreaths (not to mention I like mine more than what was available!).

Today’s secret revealed…I kept chanting “keep calm & carry on” when I was in the mad dash for our impromptu dinner party.  The kids were an amazing help getting all of their stuff picked up.  Fortunately, during one of my long phone conversations that morning, I had dusted…don’t ask me why LOL :)!

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things…

Yes, I’m singing the song…outloud…out of tune.  I am linking up today with The Nester…what a fun linky!  I love the concept of a Favorite Things Christmas Party…The WAC may need to consider this.

First things first…my day just doesn’t start properly without this one.  It is triple-lockdown when we run out…I only buy at Costco because it is sooooo much cheaper than the groceries (even when they’re on sale).  I am giving you fair warning, though…unless you are prepared for all other coffee to pale in comparison DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.  Drum roll please….Dunkin Donuts Original Roast…yummmmmmmmm!

My very favorite additive to said heavenly roast…Italian Sweet Cream by Coffee-Mate.  They started making a fat-free version, but my diet of choice (when I’m watching what I eat) is the low-carb variety…this creamer is my Kryptonite.  I have begged Coffee-Mate via their FB page to make a sugar free version, but none so far :(.  I can suffer through sub-DD coffee if I have this…

Now, it is no secret that I am not the best house keeper.  I try to keep the house mildly presentable, but my friends know me…and don’t judge me for my less than sparkling home.  We live here…and you can tell.  I do LOVE to use Mrs. Meyers Lemon Verbena ANYTHING…hand soap, counter spray, room refresher, laundry detergent…you name it, I love it.  Ethan even refers to this as my ‘perfume’…pretty sad.  I don’t wear perfume, they all give me a headache…but if they sold a body lotion in this fragrance, it would be my signature scent…I love it that much!  The most bang-for-your-buck is the All-Purpose cleaner, you can use it everywhere.

As I mentioned, I am very sensitive to fragrances…many give me outrageous headaches…but this stuff is great, softly fragranced.  Suave Naturals Soothing Lavender, I use it for myself and the kids.  I don’t wash my hair with it, but I do use it on theirs.

I am including this next item especially for this time of the year…my darling husband’s hands begin to crack and split (painfully) in the cold months.  I bought him a tin of this a couple of years ago…it is the only thing we have found that really works for him.  He is a super anti-moisturizer (hates feeling ‘greasy’), but he swears by this stuff.  Badger Balm (probably helps that it has a fairly masculine name lol).  I bought it at Ulta, not too expensive…the badger balm website has it on sale right now for less than $7.  A little really goes a long way.

Finally, my beauty obsession of 2011…Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipcolor.  I must send out a big “Thank You, Ma’am” to The Pioneer Woman for enlightening me.  I just can’t get enough of her blog…LOVE everything about it!  If I could come up with the blog of my dreams, hers would be what it looked like…well, minus the homeschooling stuff…I don’t have it in me to do that.  My very favorite, can wear it with my pajamas color is Totally Toffee…but I have many others…you can collect them all!  (kidding, well I guess you could…but some of those just wouldn’t work with my coloring).  At $5ish, you can’t go wrong!  The creamy texture really keeps me coming back…I wear it all of the time (I used to be more of a gloss kinda girl).

So, there they are…my favorite things.  I tried to keep them somewhat random, what I use everyday, and under $10 each.  The priciest of them is the coffee.

Today’s secret revealed…by Cyber Monday we had ALL of the kids’ Christmas done!  We don’t even have our tree up yet!  Woot! Woot!  We are usually still grabbing things 2 days before Christmas.

Parenting…

…it offers challenges…daily.  Some are the usual just-get-through-homework kinda challenges…others take you back a few steps.  This week, I got taken back several steps.  Some unacceptable behaviors…that I had no idea of…were brought to my attention.  I was crushed…not in denial, however.  I think that is the key…to not be a “my child would NEVER do that”.  You know what they say about never saying never.  I struggled with the “why”, “where did he learn that”…the conclusion I came to is that it is a part of growing up.  It is necessary to learn boundaries of behavior.  I am honestly amazed that I haven’t run in to an issue such as this before now.  So, I have administered what I deem to be fair, appropriate punishment…and now I have to hope he has learned a difficult lesson and that we won’t have this same issue again.

I am not going to include ugly details, let’s just leave it at he was not following The Golden Rule.  I believe a valuable lesson has been learned, and I hope that my big guy will remember this for a very long time.

My lesson has been that this behavior doesn’t mean I’m a bad parent…I believe the way you handle these challenges tells what kind of parent you are.

I can’t stay mad at that sweet face!  And the answer is…no, the boys never wear shirts when they’re at home :).

Today’s secret revealed…I was shocked by this behavior from E…I have to admit that I have one who this wouldn’t have surprised me…still wouldn’t have been okay, just wouldn’t have been shocked.

The Witch is IN!

The Good Witch of the West made her grand entrance…fireworks, cackling broom, and treats in hand.  It was like a scene from a movie…I can’t believe that we pulled it off.  Saturday night we celebrated her arrival with a costume party…what fun we had!

So, we wish all of you a safe and Happy Halloween filled with treats and wonderful memories!

Today’s secret revealed…Ethan decided he would plant 2 candy pumpkins so they would be bigger than the usual ‘jack be littles’ we grow.  Much to their delight, they woke to jumbo carving pumpkins…must be that mulch that grew them so big ;).

Happy Bloggaversary!

I probably should’ve saved yesterday’s post for today…it has been quite popular!  I guess a witch on a roof will do that…especially at this time of year :).

It is www.southerngirlsecrets.com ‘s birthday today!  I wish I would have planned a party, but it has been a busy month & this totally snuck up on me.  I think I will share my most recent ‘upcycling’ project…if you feel compelled to toast The Secrets of a Southern Girl, please don’t let my lack of a party stop you ;).

Last week, while looking for the elusive ottoman (to go with my chair)…I stumbled upon this little guy…

I decided that for $2 I couldn’t resist.  I had a plan…it involved the same spray paint as I used on my clock…and I had plenty left over.  Here is the paint, just in case you do better with a visual…

I used the ‘short bursts in a sweeping motion’ technique Darling Husband taught me…it took 2 coats & I had to let him dry and flip him over to get under his bill & tail.  This is what he looks like now…

I kinda love him…up close you see that he is a cheesy ceramic duck spray painted by an amateur.   Added to my bookcase…

He is an interesting pop of color that really jives with our decor…and he kinda represents us…The Ducks :).

I think I love spray paint!  What do you have that could really be transformed with a shot of color???

Today’s secret revealed…I have been taking pictures for my posts with Instagram on my iPhone…what do y’all think?

My Mom Drives a Stick…or So My Kids Think

We have a special Halloween tradition in my family…my Mom, a.k.a. Witchy Winnie, crash lands on her broom at our house.  This wasn’t so complicated when we lived in Arizona, she crashed into our foyer every year…it was hilarious…and the kids LOVED it!  Last year, sometime in September, my oldest asked Mimi if her broom was going to make it all the way to our new house (kids never forget fun stuff like this!)…he got a little emotional about the possibility that the broom didn’t have enough ‘magic’ to get that far…so she hung up & bought a plane ticket.  The Friday before Halloween, the boys got off of the bus…they found a mysterious bag with various items strewn about the yard…then they heard a call “HELP!  I’m stuck…can you help me get down?”…there she was in all of her witchy glory…

On the roof!  She tossed candy to them, and the kids had to help her figure out how to get down…and then find her boots (notice no shoes in the picture).  We burned that broom, with sparklers stuck in it…we told the kids that if the fire sparked, there was still some magic and the broom would be back…I hope no one thinks we’re weirdos…this isn’t much different than our Elf on the Shelf tradition (the elf flies to the North Pole, Mimi flies here)…not sinister in anyway…she is a good witch :).  This even got some media coverage in Phoenix…they interviewed her over the phone for one of the Morning News shows.

So, the broom is getting revved up…the landing zone is going to be the ‘pumpkin patch’.  I planted several pumpkins in the spring, but the squash bugs killed them…now I’m resorting to planting candy pumpkins to “grow” real pumpkins (we’ve done this in the past)…it is a fun tradition, too.  We’re thinking of some fireworks to announce her arrival…another bonus of living in South Carolina, you can buy fireworks anytime of year.

The house is getting ready, I’ve added some Halloween decor…still need a little more.

My ‘funkin’ dressed up with upholstery tacks (thanks PINTEREST!)…

I’m loving the orange with the turquoise…such a versatile color!

Today’s secret revealed…E thinks that you can really plant candy pumpkins and grow real pumpkins overnight…I love that he still believes in the magic of childhood…it will be a difficult day for me when he no longer believes.  The drawback…I have to explain this to his teacher because he wants to take some dirt in a cup and show her how we grow real pumpkins from candy…oops!

Kitchen Clock…tick…tock

I have confessed my Pinterest addiction…I’m amazed that I have strayed away from it long enough to complete a project.  The very first day that I succombed to the power of Pinterest, I found this clock…I knew I had to have one, at least something similar…with my own twist.  I hopped over to ebay, luck must have been on my side…I found the exact clock…I held my breath, waiting for the auction to end…SCORE!  I got it with a winning bid of $13!  I did the happy dance!  Here is the pic from ebay:

Yeah, not exactly ready to hang LOL…and it is plastic…ewwwww.  So I headed to Lowe’s for some spray paint.  I found just the shade of turquoise I was looking for “tropical oasis” in Valspar’s spray paint line (they have great colors…and I wish Lowe’s was paying me to say that 😉 ).

I recruited my husband to show me how to spray paint properly…believe it or not this was my first spray painting adventure.  I did all of the spray painting outside, and no pics…I didn’t want to risk getting overspray on my camera.  Here is what it looked like when I brought it in.  To protect the face of the clock, we loosened the bolt holding the hands & face in place…then I wrapped it up in one of my favorite household items, Glad Press & Seal. I used wads of Press & Seal to elevate the face, too.

See, I almost forgot to take a post-spray paint, pre-antiquing glaze picture.  I had to use the ebay picture because I totally forgot the ‘before’ shot…until I was done with the 2nd coat :).  I let the spray paint dry overnight before starting the antiquing glaze process.  I slathered it on…and wiped it off…you remember my tips on antiquing glaze, right?  I didn’t take any pics of that, either…I had the glaze all over my hands!  I really need an assistant…volunteers???

And the results…I LOOOOOOOVE it!

And another angle, so you can see a little more detail…

And here is the wall…you might remember my ‘risky’ post about the rolling pin.

Today’s secret revealed…one major thing I learned about spray painting…clean the surfaces to be spray painted…BEFORE beginning…the dust in the crevices just added to the ‘charm’ when I started antiquing…but it could’ve been a disaster on another project.

Leftover Dinner for Breakfast…

I’m not talking about pizza or chinese, a la college.  Last night we had a birthday dinner for the lovely Miss Lisa…spaghetti, french bread, and cheesecake were on the menu.  We had a wonderful time, so glad Lisa decided to share her day with us.

Fast forward to this morning.  It is a gloomy, overcast, chilly(ish), lazy kinda morning.  I have about a quarter of the loaf of french bread sitting on the counter.  I’m thinking FRENCH TOAST!  Just enough for me & little Em.  I was so happy to find all of the ingredients on hand.  This is one of those recipes I just accidentally came up with…and it was awesome.  The texture of the middle of the bread when done is custard-y (one of my favorite things on the planet).

Here’s what you do:  Beat 2 eggs with 1 can of evaporated milk in a shallow & wide dish, sprinkle in cinnamon (do this to your liking).  Slice french bread into 1 inch pieces.  Put bread slices into egg mixture & allow them to soak it up like a sponge.  Cook on a hot (greased…I use butter) griddle or frying pan over medium-low heat.  Flip when browned.  It is done when the center is somewhat firm (you can always cut it to check).  Serve with whatever strikes your fancy…today I used Mrs. Butterworth’s.

Today’s secret revealed…cooking that & writing this have been the most productive things I have done today…I really need to get motivated!
